The Duffy family of Germantown takes a personal interest every year in supporting the American Heart Association through the Jump Rope for Heart fundraiser at Cedar Grove Elementary School because a favorite uncle survived two open-heart surgeries in 1990.
‘‘We were really fortunate and lucky for him to get through that,” said Chelsea Duffy, 15. ‘‘I wanted to fund more research.”
Chelsea, a sophomore at Clarksburg High School, and Austin Duffy, 11, a fifth-grader, raised more than $20,000 during their years at the school. In honor of the $1,530 Austin raised this year and the more than $6,000 donated at Cedar Grove, Austin smashed a pie in the face of teacher Cheryl Wyatt.
