The Shakers Band
The Velours, a Bethesda-based band, play on a temporary stage at the Wheaton Community Center, then known as the Wheaton Youth Center, during a 1965 Battle of the Bands competition. The Velours, that year's champion, drew a large crowd of teenagers in what became a weekend ritual for many in the ‘60s. But they weren't the only band to draw crowds—music junkies say national acts such as Led Zeppelin also played at the Wheaton Youth Center.
