High-school students attend national teaching convention

A long-held dream of several Montgomery County Public Schools chapters of the Future Educators Association was realized last month when 16 FEA members and officers attended the group’s annual national convention in Atlanta, Ga. Six faculty advisors and two parents joined the trip.

It was the first time MCPS was represented at the convention.

Those attending were:

Seneca Valley High School students Shana Carder, Jeanee Carrasquillo, Erika Hunter, Ashley Kemp, Vanessa Manor, Camille Martinez, Morgan Matthews, Melanie Rowe, Lauren Riehl and Natalie Sayag; advisors Jennifer Bach and Diane Chang, and parents Andrea Rowe and Barbara Riehl from Seneca Valley;

Col. Zadock Magruder High School students Courtney Chick and Katie Ray and advisor Susan Boyle; Walt Whitman High School students Nora Levey, Natalie Lutz, Lauren Neudorfer and Pierre VanBoxel and advisor Marjorie Eiserike; Watkins Mill High School advisor Julie Riggleman, and Thomas S. Wootton High School advisor Susan Thorpe.

The national convention, sponsored by Phi Delta Kappa International, brought over 2,000 student members and advisors together in the theme ‘‘Fulfill the Dream ...Teach! 2006.” Students and advisors heard keynote speakers and were able to choose from workshops a variety of workshops.

Student school boardcandidates named

Two finalists for student member of the Board of Education were chosen last Thursday.

Lindsay Abbett, a junior at Quince Orchard High School, and Sarah Horvitz, a junior at Springbrook High School, were selected by 253 voting middle and high school delegates attending the Student Member of the Board of Education Nominating Convention.

The finalists were chosen from a field of five candidates at the convention, hosted at Northwest High School.

On April 26, all secondary students in Montgomery County Public Schools will have the opportunity to vote for one of the two candidates to serve as their 29th student representative on the board.

Clarksburg High continuesto meet with community

Two informational meetings for those interested in Clarksburg High School are planned as follows:

Tonight, 7 p.m. at Rocky Hill Middle School, 22401 Brick Haven Way in Clarksburg.

March 29, 7 p.m. at Neelsville Middle School, 11700 Neelsville Church Road, Germantown.

For Watkins Mill parentsand their teen drivers

The School Community Action Team at Watkins Mill High School will present a program tiled ‘‘Can I Borrow the Car?” It will be an opportunity to learn about Maryland’s graduated driver’s license and recent changes in driving laws.

The program will be held March 20 from 7-8:30 p.m. in the media center at Montgomery Village Middle School, 19300 Watkins Mill Road.

Representatives from the Motor Vehicle Administration and 6th District Montgomery County Police will be on hand to present information and answer questions.

Kinder orientation at McNair

Ronald McNair Elementary, 13881 Hopkins Road, Germantown will hold its annual kindergarten orientation April 6 and 7.

Orientation is by appointment only. Parents are asked to stop by the school as soon as possible to pick-up an enrollment packet and to make an appointment. For more information contact the school at 301-353-0854.

Seneca Valley holds college and career fair

Seneca Valley High School will host a College and Career Fair on March 22. More than 50 colleges and vocational schools will participate, including Penn State, Villa Julie, William and Mary, North Carolina State, Radford, American, West Point, and Salisbury. The event will be held from 6 to 9 p.m.

Information sessions on NCAA rules and regulations, college essay writing, creating an art portfolio, and financial aid will be held.
