‘The Awakening’ lands at National Harbor‘‘The Awakening,” a giant sculpture by Seward Johnson, was moved Wednesday and installed at National Harbor in Prince George’s County. The sculpture, which has rested at Hains Point in East Potomac Park, was dug up in the morning and transported by barge to its new site on the east banks of the Potomac River. ‘‘The Awakening” includes five cast aluminum elements and is more than 70 feet across. Previously owned by Sculpture Foundation, it was available for sale for several years because Hains Point had been designated as a site for future memorials, according to the National Park Service. Milton V. Peterson of The Peterson Companies, developer of National Harbor, bought the sculpture to be the centerpiece of the $2 billion project. Once installed, it will be covered until an official unveiling ceremony is held. Throughout April, National Harbor will begin to open in phases with the unveiling of ‘The Awakening,’ launching its water taxi service and hosting events. Openings of retail, dining and entertainment will continue to open throughout 2008.
