A 12-year-old boy was critically injured in a car accident in Germantown Tuesday night.

Side airbags likely saved Carson Daniel Fehner’s life, said Capt. Thomas Didone, commander of the Fifth District Police Station in Germantown.

Carson sustained serious head trauma after the minivan driven by his mother, Terry Fehner, 51, made a left turn into the path of a oncoming tow truck and was struck about 8:15 p.m. Tuesday, according to county police.

Carson was airlifted to Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C. He is listed in critical but stable condition, police said. He is expected to survive his injuries, Didone said.

Terry Fehner was not injured, police said.

The minivan turned left from Germantown Road onto Dawson Farm Road in front of the tow truck, which was carrying a vehicle, Didone said. Both the minivan and the tow truck had green lights.

The driver of the tow truck, Earl Jobe, 48, of Ellicott City was not injured in the crash, police said.

The cause of this accident is under investigation by detectives from the Collision Reconstruction Unit, police said.
