Special delivery: Pen-pal makes a visit to King

After several months of exchanging letters through ‘‘Operation Pen Pal,” seventh-grade students at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School met their writing buddy.

The students in Patsy Manor’s three reading classes wrote to Army reservist Sgt. Maj. Mike Eason, who was stationed in Iraq with the 2nd National Police Division Transition Team, from February to June 2007.

Eason visited the school and met with students who he exchanged letters with in late January. He brought an American flag that flew in Baghdad, Iraq, on Sept. 11, 2007, to donate to the Germantown school.

Manor’s husband worked with Eason at the U.S. Department of Justice.

When the project started, only a few of Manor’s students were interesting in corresponding with Eason.

But he responded to the letters so quickly that many students became eager to participate.

‘‘At first the letters were sent by e-mail, then because there were so many letters, I had to mail them off to him,” assistant school administrator Gabriella Grayson wrote in an e-mail to The Gazette.

Students shared news of school activities and professional sports teams and asked him about food and the conditions in Iraq.

He answered each letter personally and sent photographs, Grayson wrote.

Eason presented the school with an American flag, a certificate and a picture of the 2nd National Police Division Transition Team.

‘‘Sergeant Major Eason was very touched by the letters and the gifts that he received from the MLK Family,” Grayson wrote. ‘‘It was truly an honor to have him here. Mrs. Manor planned a wonderful “Welcome Home“ event that made us all so very proud.”
