Making a clean sweep
The Lean Green Cleaning Machines, a robotics team formed in 2008 by middle school students in Gaithersburg, won first prize last month at the 2008-2009 First Lego League State competition at the University of Maryland Baltimore.
It was the team's second year taking a first place award at the competition and the team's robot won an award for innovative design.
Gaithersburg residents Suri Venugopal, Kapish Manicka and Matthew Bird and Damascus resident Patrick Scott took the prize.
Venugopal, a freshman at Northwest High School in Germantown; Manicka, a freshman at Col. Zadok Magruder High School in Derwood and Bird, a freshman at Poolesville High School are original team members who met through the 4-H Adventure in Science Program at Gaithersburg's National Institute of Standards and Technology. Scott, a seventh-grader at Montgomery Village Middle School, joined the team this year, along with his father John, who is the team's coach.
MCPS students are candidates for Presidential Scholars award
Twenty Montgomery County Public Schools seniors were selected as candidates for the Presidential Scholars award, considered by many to be one of the highest honors given to high school students in the United States.
Students are invited to apply based on their scores on the SAT or ACT exam. The program also recognizes students who demonstrate exceptional talent in the visual, creative and performing arts. Last year, the county school system had 15 Presidential Scholars candidates, including one scholar in the arts.
All 20 candidates this year were chosen from high school seniors nationwide for academic achievement. There were no candidates for the arts component of the program this year.
Candidates and their schools are: Jessica Chen, Edward Gan, Sneha Kannan, Willy Li, Daniel Stiles, Monica Wei and Henry Zhang from Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring; Lucas Chang and Andrew Cho from Winston Churchill High School in Potomac; Kevin Haaga, Kara Karpman, Claire Kwong, Abiola Laniyonu, Rebecca Portman and Nathan Prillaman from Richard Montgomery High School in Rockville; Carly Gayle from Poolesville High School; Thomas Berry and Rachel Zhang from Walt Whitman High School in Bethesda; and Jonathan Liang and Andrea Tian from Thomas S. Wootton High School in Rockville.
