Damascus Girl Scouts in Daisy Troop 203 and Junior Troop 4859 teamed up for a Valentine’s Day service project for soldiers serving in Iraq.

The two troops consisting of 10 kindergartners and 18 sixth-graders collected spare change while Christmas caroling in Damascus in December. Through the generosity of their neighbors, the girls raised $140, which they used to buy materials to make 90 felt hearts filled with cards and candy.

The cards express the girls’ love and gratitude to the soldiers serving their country.

The service project, inspired by the sixth-grade troop, has helped the kindergarten troop understand the importance of serving their country and helping people, which are basic values in Girl Scouting, Girl Scout Leader Dee Dauber said.

The cards were sent to Army Staff Sgt. Robert D. Brickner in G Company 2⁄32 FA, Unit 43358, which is serving just outside of Baghdad.

Brickner is the uncle of Daisy Girl Scout Angie Dauber and Junior Girl Scout Kimmi Dauber. He will distribute the homemade candy-filled hearts and cards for Valentine’s Day to the men and women in his company.
