Band raises money for summer scholarship fund

The Carroll Concert Band, under the direction of Glenn W. Patterson, will present its annual ‘‘Sousa Style” concert at 7:30 p.m., March 13, at Winters Mill High School in Westminster.

The concert will include the premiere of a new composition for band and chorus, ‘‘Carroll Canons” written by Dr. D. J. Sparr using the text of poet Henry Ditman from his ‘‘A Carroll County Carol”. Both gentlemen currently reside in Carroll County.

Sparr is a full time composer⁄musician who grew up in the Hampstead area. Henry Ditman is an engineer who has had a lifelong love for writing poetry.

Guest soloist for the concert is Lucas Spiros of Mount Airy. Spiros has performed with the band many times and is a retired principal euphonium player from the United States Marine Band in Washington, D.C. He will perform Fantasia De Concerto.

Tickets for the concert are available at the Carroll County Arts Council, Stu’s Music Shop, Coffey Music, in Westminster, and Hess Music in Manchester. Tickets are $ 7 for adults, $ 3 for students, $6 for senior citizens, and $ 14 for family.

Proceeds from the concert will support the Carroll County Arts Council musical instrument bank and the Carroll Concert Band summer music camp scholarship fund. For more information call the Arts Council at 410-848-7272 or Glenn Patterson at 410-848-5581.

Singing valentines

The Old Line Statesmen Barbershop Chorus will have several quartets delivering singing valentine’s through out Carroll County.

Each quartet will be dressed in formal attire ready to surprise loved ones at work, home, in restaurants, in the hospital or nursing home or just about anywhere. The quartet will arrive unannounced singing ‘‘I Love You Truly” and ‘‘Heart of My Heart” presenting your loved one with a rose, box of chocolates, personalized card from the sender, and a keepsake photograph of the event.

The Old Line Statesmen Chorus has been entertaining audiences for 23 years, is an award-winning, non-profit, male vocal ensemble and a member of the international Barbershop Harmony Society. In the Carroll area, they perform at a variety of functions including anniversaries, birthdays, corporate meetings and church events. In addition, they entertain senior citizens and nursing home residents at facilities around the county and support music education in schools and the community.
