Interested individuals can submit advance bids for laser eye surgery through Friday as part of this year’s A Taste of Mount Airy fundraiser for the Mount Airy Youth Athletic Association.

The sports-themed event takes place Saturday and guests are encouraged to come to the Mount Airy Fire Company’s activities building on Twin Arch Road dressed in their favorite sports attire. The event begins at 6:30 p.m. and attendees can continue to bid on the laser eye surgery package as well as other items and services donated by individuals and businesses in the Mount Airy community.

The event, now in its sixth year, helps the youth association raise money to purchase equipment. Last year’s A Taste of Mount Airy raised nearly $20,000.

‘‘I’m very excited to be able to help out,” said Dr. Christopher Coleman of The Laser Eye Center & Mount Airy Eye Care Center Associates that donated the surgery and six follow-up visits.

‘‘One of the most rewarding things in my practice is seeing someone walk out with Lasik so to be able to [do that and] also help the community...I hope it’s the first year of many,” he said.

Tickets, which cost $30, can be purchased at New York J & P Pizza, 409 E. Ridgeville Blvd.; The Greene Turtle, 1604 Ridgeside Dr.; and New Windsor Bank, 1001 Twin Arch Road, all in Mount Airy.

The price includes food, beverages and dessert from local establishments and performances by the Monaldi Brothers Band, an Italian music group that also performed last year.

The event’s sports theme will also carry over to some of the items available in the live and silent auctions, such as autographed pictures of professional athletes and Mount Airy Youth Athletic Association gift baskets. Trips, beauty products and other services will also be available.

Participating restaurants include Brick Ridge, Carterque Barbeque & Grilling Company, Concetta’s Italian Grocer, Four Seasons, Greene Turtle, Mount Airy Liquors, New York J & P Pizza, Olive Leaf, Siempre De Fiesta, Starbucks Coffee Company, Subway⁄TCBY, Super Suppers and Upper Deck.

Century Ford Dodge Chrysler & Jeep of Mount Airy is sponsoring the dessert table; BB&T Bank, the raw bar; and Illiano & Sweet Residential & Commercial Real Estate, the band.
