Edison High School plans Thursday open house

Thomas Edison High School of Technology will hold an open house 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the school, 12501 Dalewood Drive, Silver Spring. Edison offers 19 career and technical-oriented programs to students enrolled in high school within Montgomery County Public Schools.

Students spend two and one-half hours each day at Edison and earn three credits per year.

‘Little Shop of Horrors’at Northwood

Northwood High School’s production of ‘‘Little Shop of Horrors” will be held 7 p.m. Feb. 14-17 and 2 p.m. Feb. 17 at the school, 919 University Blvd. W., Silver Spring. Tickets are $7 adults and $5 for students and seniors. Call 301-649-8088.

‘‘Little Shop of Horrors” is a 1982 musical by composer Alan Menken and writer Howard Ashman. It tells the story of a flower shop worker who raises a plant that feeds on humans.

Stars of the production are senior Perry Adkinson and freshman Carolyn Bruch, according to a news release from Northwood. The role of Ronnette will by played by Heather McWilliams, with Gabrielle Winick in the role of Crystal. The owner of the shop, Mr. Mushnik, will be played by Jacob Verduin, with Daniel Pierce in the roles of Dr. Orin Scrivello, Mr. Bernstein, Mrs. Luce, Skip Snip and Patrick Martin.

The voice of the plant will be played by Dawoud Jones, while the pod itself will be manipulated by Stephen Baugham and Stephen Betsock. The rest of the Skid Row community will be played by Kady Kilmer, Sara Mozersky, Briana O’Brien and Kathryn Schaus.

Stage manager for the show is Derricka McDaniel, and the director is Claire T. Dus Sault.

Valentine Bingoat Jackson Road ES

Woodlin ES to hold silent auction, winter festival

The Woodlin Elementary School PTA Silent Auction and Winter Festival will be held 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at the school, 2101 Luzerne Ave., Silver Spring. Calvary Lutheran School, a Christian K-9 school, will have an open house 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the school, 9545 Georgia Ave., Silver Spring.

Calvary Lutheran School will host a ‘‘Winter Festival” at 10 a.m. Saturday for parents and children, pre-school through seconnd-grade. There will be puppets, winter songs, stories, snacks and crafts.

On Feb. 29, Calvary Lutheran School will end its studies for Black History Month with ‘‘Movin’ to Motown” at 2 p.m. The public is invited.

Takoma Park ES MagnetProgram open house

Takoma Park Elementary School is hosting an information session on its primary magnet program for parents of kindergarten students who live in Montgomery County but outside the TPES boundary 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. today.

Parents will learn how to apply to have their children tested for the program, which offers enriched and accelerated instruction to students who demonstrate academic potential across all subject areas.

Blake getsyearbook award

James Hubert Blake High School’s yearbook, Tempo, was recently awarded first place in the American Scholastic Press Association’s Annual Review and Contest.

A first-place award from the American Scholastic Press Association goes to schools with ‘‘an outstanding overall example of a scholastic publication in format, content and presentation,” according to the ASPA

The ASPA also provides advice on page design, story layout, graphics, headlining, cover design, advertising placement and photography.

Blake assistant principalwins award

James Hubert Blake High School Assistant Principal Joseph Du Boyce has been honored by the College Board as its 2008 Advanced Placement Program Outstanding Teacher Award for the Middle States Region.

As a direct result of Du Boyce’s efforts, Blake’s Advanced Placement enrollment has increased from 740 AP tests taken in 2005 to 936 in 2007, according to a news release from the school.

Du Boyce is a 21-year Montgomery County Public School educator. Previously he taught social studies at both Blake and Magruder high schools and was the department chair of social studies at Blake.

The Middle State Regional Office of the College Board will present the award to Du Boyce at the Regional Forum Awards Luncheon Feb. 14 at the Sheraton Atlantic City Hotel.

Springbrook winsforeign language grant

Karen Willetts and Springbrook High School’s Foreign Language Department won a $10,000 grant from the National Foreign Language Center of the University of Maryland’s STARTALK project. A proposal was submitted to hold an ‘‘Arabic Summer Institute: An Introduction to the Arabic Language and Cultures.,” according to a news release from Springbrook.

Entrepreneur contesttaking applications

Junior Achievement of the National Capital Area is accepting applications for the Fifth Annual Youth Entrepreneur of the Year award until April. The competition is open to any student in the 9th through 12th grade who has started and is running his or her own business.

The winner will be recognized at the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year awards banquet on June 19 and will also receive a $1,000 scholarship and an opportunity to meet many of the region’s top business leaders.

Springbrook to holdHeritage Week

Springbrook High School will hold Heritage Week Feb. 11-15 to highlight the school’s mix of cultures. Cafeteria lunches will feature different ethnic foods each day, and entertainment will be featured daily. On Feb. 13, students will be encouraged to wear traditional attire from their home country.

‘Swing into Spring’at Springbrook

Springbrook High School will hold its seventh annual ‘‘Swing into Spring” dinner-dance 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. March 8. The event is sponsored by the school’s music booster club. Proceeds benefit Springbrook’s music program.

Local singer⁄songwriter Patty Reese, a Washington Area Music Award winner and Springbrook graduate, will perform. Members of the Springbrook Instrumental Music Program will serve dinner with music provided by the school’s string ensemble, followed by a performance by the school’s jazz band. Attendees can participate in a silent auction and free dance lesson.

Tickets are $25 per person and can be purchased through the Springbrook High School Instrumental Music Department at 301-989-6062. Reservations must be made by March 1.

The event will be held in the Brook Café at the school, 201 Valley Brook Drive in Silver Spring.

African American assembly at Argyle

Argyle Middle School will hold its first African-American assembly, themed ‘‘In Their Footsteps,” 7 p.m. Feb. 22. Organizers hope the assembly will become an annual event. The school is located at 2400 Bel Pre Road in Silver Spring.
