Open forum: Kauffman for school board

After reading and hearing about the tough financial times we’re looking at in Montgomery County, I’m recalling the years of fiscal oversight that Sharon Cox has invested on the Montgomery County School Board.

As a resident of Germantown, she understands the needs of our upcounty schools and supports our efforts to improve our children’s education, but not to the detriment of other children in the county. It is Sharon’s sense of fairness, combined with her in-depth knowledge of the school programs that distinguishes her among her peers. Sadly, she has decided not to run for re-election.

Next week, we will be voting to replace her in the primary election. In reviewing the list of candidates, Phil Kauffman seems to come closest to having Sharon’s knowledge of the upcounty concerns, school programs and budget realities. His experience as a cluster coordinator and as the area vice president for the Northeast Consortium combine with his professional and volunteer experience to make an excellent start in filling the void we’ll feel when Sharon vacates her position. Please take the time next Tuesday to vote for Phil Kauffman, Board of Education.
