Gazette-Star High School Athlete of the Week: Leslie Murray, High Point

The High Point High senior was an overall force and record setter on Jan. 24 at the county indoor track and field championships at the Sports and Learning Complex in Landover. Murray established a new meet record with a long jump of 22 feet, 8.25 inches. He also won the boys’ 500-meter run and had a second-place finish in the high jump. For his efforts, Murray was named the meet’s most outstanding performer for field events.

Honor Roll: Indoor Track

Oxon Hill sophomore Deseree King was named most outstanding performer in track events at last week’s county championships after she won both the girls’ 500 and 800 runs.

Henry A. Wise High senior Ernest Cooper was named boys’ most outstanding performer in track events as he won the 55 hurdles and the 300 and led the Pumas’ 800 relay team to a second-place finish.

Eleanor Roosevelt senior Daniel Edmunds established a new county championship meet record in the boys’ 800 with a time of 1 minute, 58.8 seconds. Edmunds followed that with a 1:56.3 clocking for a second-place finish at the Virginia Tech Invitational last weekend.

Roosevelt seniors Brian Faherty and Dominique Lockhart swept the 1,600 and 3,200 for the boys and girls, respectively, at the county championships last week.

Honor Roll: Girls’ Basketball

Surrattsville’s Brittany Barber had 27 points in a losing effort on Tuesday as the Hornets dropped a 63-61 decision to Largo in overtime.

Erica Vincent had 11 points to lead Oxon Hill to a 43-39 victory in overtime on Tuesday against Northwestern.

Gwynn Park’s Lynnae Lampkins had 23 points and Brittany Crowell added 20 to lead the Yellow Jackets to a 75-17 win against Forestville.

Eleanor Roosevelt’s Elasier Hall had 27 points as the Raiders cruised past Parkdale, 75-35, on Tuesday.

Honor Roll: Boys’ Basketball

Trevor Watson had 18 points on Tuesday to lead Frederick Douglass to an 80-70 victory against Potomac.

Deonte Edmunds had 20 points for Oxon Hill on Tuesday as the Clippers held off Northwestern, 68-65. Sydne Burke had 27 in the losing effort for the Wildcats.

Dewayne Jackson had 24 points for Bowie on Tuesday as the Bulldogs beat Bladensburg, 62-49.

Marquise Simons had 21 points and 16 rebounds and teammate Chris Kaman had 19 points and 12 rebounds as the Falcons earned a 58-44 victory against Friendly on Tuesday.

Chaune Duffy led Fairmont Heights with 31 points as the Hornets outlasted Crossland, 109-100, in overtime on Tuesday. Sean Smith scored a game-high 37 points for Crossland.

Sean Thomas had 28 points to help Gwynn Park remain undefeated with a 72-63 victory against Forestville.
