WSSC’s plans drain customers

Attention customers of WSSC in Prince George’s County and Montgomery County. WSSC General Manager Andrew Brunhart wants to speed up the replacement of water and sewer lines in both counties. Can your afford this huge increase?

His plan is to raise rates next July 2008 to 9.5 percent and 11.5 percent in 2009. He is also proposing to charge each customer an additional $20 a month for the next 10 years. The extra charge will cost you $2,400 over 10 years. The reason for this $2,400 is to speed things up.

The question is: What ever happened to good planning? Mr. Brunhart cites the 2,100 pipe bursts [that] leave customers without water and cause traffic jams. Don’t you think there [will] be traffic jams when WSSC starts tearing up our streets? Is 2,100 pipe breaks average or above normal?

He needs to show a real need for replacement before burdening WSSC customers with a huge financial burden. Call your council and General Assembly members to stop this proposal now. Note: there will be public hearing Feb. 6 in Largo and Feb. 7 in Rockville.
