College to give External Diploma Program information

Carroll Community College will hold two information sessions in February on its External Diploma Program, an adult education alternative to the GED.

The first session will be held 6:30 p.m. Monday and the second 9 p.m. Wednesday. Both sessions will be held at 224 N. Center St., Westminster.

Scooter raffle

Howard County Library is raffling a red 2007 LX 150 Vespa Scooter.

Tickets are $40 each or 3 for $100. Only 250 tickets will be sold and are available at any Howard County Library branch or online at

Ash Wednesdaysoup meal

Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church will hold an Ash Wednesday soup meal Wednesday.

Meals will be served from 11:30 am to 1: 30 pm and from 4:30 to 6:30 pm. The last seating will be at 6:30 pm. Several choices of soup, breads and beverages will be offered.

A donation of $6 is suggested for adults; $3 for youth from 5 to 12 years of age; and those under 5 are free. Carryout will be available. The meal is open to the public and tickets are available at the door.

This soup meal has been a tradition at Grace for more than 30 years and many volunteers from the church help set up and serve the more than 200 guests. There is also an Ash Wednesday worship service at noon and again at 7:30 p.m. in the Sanctuary of Grace for all who wish to attend.

Rescue Missionbook fair and sale

The Westminster Rescue Mission will hold a book fair and sale from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 8 and 9 at 658 Luabaugh Mill Road, Westminster.

All kinds of books will be available as well as a lounge are with coffee, tea and dessert for sale. Hot dogs and fresh baked items will also be available for purchase.

Youth volleyballskills clinic

The Carroll Viper Volleyball Club will hold a youth skills clinic from 6:15 to 7:45 p.m. Wednesdays beginning Feb. 6 at Parrs Ridge Elementary School.

The clinic is open to girls and boys of all levels ages 8 to 11. Players will be separated into skill levels the second week of the clinic. Cost for the seven week program is $60.

Calvary Cabaret

Calvary United Methodist Church’s youth choir and youth fellowship will be hosting their first “Calvary Cabaret“ Feb. 9.

Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show starts at 7:30 p.m. Presale tickets are $10 each, or $30 per immediate family. Tickets will be $12 at the door. Children five and under are free and the nursery will be available for small children.

Frank Mabry, a local Grand Ole Opry singer and guitarist, will host the evening as well as entertain. Members of Calvary will participate in musical acts and skits. Light refreshments and gourmet desserts will be served. The evening will also include a silent auction beginning at 7 p.m.

The fund-raiser will benefit the youth choir outreach events, and other youth fellowship outreach programs, such as the Mount Airy Net, Mission of Mercy, and Self Help. Self Help is a program where youth fellowship members and other members of the church participate in the construction of homes for families in need.
