Takoma Park Police say a man got out of a white delivery-style truck in the 1300 block of University Boulevard Tuesday before 8:30 a.m. Tuesday and tried to abduct a 27-year-old woman who was waiting for a ride. The woman escaped but was injured, police said.
Police have charged a Bladensburg man with attempted murder and kidnapping in connection with a Tuesday morning assault and attempted abduction of a 27-year-old woman in Takoma Park.

Richard Manning Miller, 44, of the 4200 block of 58th Avenue was arrested Wednesday night after detectives followed a tip that led them to a trucking company that sub-leased to Miller a vehicle matching the description of the one used in the abduction attempt, according to a news release from the Takoma Park Police Department.

Miller was arrested in the 6800 block of New Hampshire Avenue, the release said. Police obtained a warrant to search Miller’s vehicle and residence and found evidence they say linked Miller to the crime, the release said.

Police have not yet made that evidence public, said Cathy Plevy, a spokeswoman for Takoma Park police.

In addition to the attempted murder and kidnapping charges, Miller was also charged with first-degree assault and reckless endangerment, Plevy said.

The Tuesday incident occurred in the 1300 block of University Boulevard just before 8:30 a.m., when the woman was waiting for a ride and approached by a man in a white truck who assaulted and grabbed her, police said. The man tried to pull her into the back of the truck, but she managed to escape.

The woman was taken to Washington Hospital Center’s MedStar unit with non-life-threatening injuries, police said. She was still hospitalized Thursday and is in stable condition, Plevy said.

Video surveillance cameras at the nearby Pollo Campero restaurant captured the incident, and the video was made available to media late Tuesday.
