The Grace Brethren Christian School girls' basketball program has a new all-time leading scorer. Junior Andrea Jones had 19 points on Monday night in the Eagles' 66-33 victory against Washington Waldorf and overtook former teammate Patrice Haskins for the all-time lead.
Jones, who has been playing for the Clinton private school's varsity team since she was in seventh grade, finished the night with 2,116 points for her career. Haskins, who was a senior when Jones was a seventh-grader, had 2,108 points in six varsity seasons, as she also started playing for the Eagles in seventh grade.
"[Jones] went into the game understanding that she needed 12 points to pass the record, but she never came out looking to score, she wanted to get everyone involved," said Grace Brethren coach Jeff Perry. "It's a great accomplishment. She's such a humble, coachable kid."
In addition to Jones, Grace Brethren also got 19 points from eighth-grader Jade Scaife and 17 from junior Destiny Brooks. Those contributions were critical, as the Eagles have been without center Lynee Belton for several games. Perry said Belton has a badly sprained ankle and could miss another few weeks. He added that he hopes she'll be able to return during the Potomac Valley Athletic Conference playoffs, which get under way on Feb. 17.
Grace Brethren improved to 14-1 overall and 12-0 in the PVAC with Monday's victory.
