PVAC North Division basketball title is up for grabsThe battle for the Potomac Valley Athletic Conference boys basketball North Division between Barrie and Jewish Day raged throughout the regular season last winter. With Barrie’s hard-fought, 31-29 win last Tuesday, a similar scenario could occur this season, as the Mustangs (8-4, 6-3 PVAC) moved within a game of frontrunner and defending division champion Jewish Day (9-3, 8-2) heading into this week. The Mustangs earned a regular-season sweep of the Lions who, like Barrie, had last Thursday’s contest postponed because of inclement weather. ‘‘It’s a tough loss just because you hate losing to a team twice in a division,” Jewish Day coach Eyal Fierst said. ‘‘We’re still the only team in our division that has two losses. We’re still in control of our destiny. We have to keep trying to get better.” The defensive struggle saw the Lions take a 10-8 halftime lead, only to be outscored 17-8 in the third quarter before rallying for a late tie. Barrie junior guard Bobby Yancey scored in transition with less than a second remaining to win the game. ‘‘We ran our offense a little better and knocked down a couple of 3s,” Mitchell said of the second half. ‘‘You could feel the intensity on the court, and with the scoring being the way it was, every shot attempt really counted.” Fierst believes his team’s ultimate downfall was its inconsistency on the offensive end, despite 11 points each from forward Eitan Chemerinski and guard Ezra Weisel. ‘‘We really didn’t execute well,” he said. ‘‘We missed a lot of open shots.” Last Thursday’s snow denied Jewish Day a chance to shake off that loss against another division contender, Covenant Life (7-5, 7-3 PVAC).
