A car wreck on Clara Barton Parkway in Glen Echo left one dead this morning after a Honda Civic and a Ford Explorer traveling in opposite directions collided shortly after 5:30 a.m., according to the U.S. Park Police.
The collision happened at Lock 6. The victim, Joseph Quigley, 24, of Annandale, Va., was traveling east on Clara Barton Parkway toward Washington when the driver of the Ford who was traveling west crossed over the median and struck Quigley's vehicle, according to Sgt. Robert LaChance, a spokesman for the U.S. Park Police.
Two males and two females were riding in the Ford, all of whom were transported to a local hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries, LaChance said.
The driver of the Ford is cooperating with police, LaChance said. The cause of the collision has yet to be determined, LaChance said, and it will be decided during the course of the investigation if charges will be filed.
According to LaChance, Clara Barton Parkway was operating on a "holiday schedule" this inauguration day, meaning that the parkway was serving two-way traffic. Normally the parkway serves one-way traffic during weekday rush hours, LaChance said. LaChance said he is unsure if confusion over traffic patterns on the parkway led to the crash.
Clara Barton Parkway remained closed in both directions between the Glen Echo turnaround and Chain Bridge Road shortly after 1 p.m. Inbound traffic is detoured onto MacArthur Boulevard, while outbound travelers should use Chain Bridge.
LaChance said the U.S. Park Police hope to re-open Clara Barton Parkway this afternoon.
