Church takes on expansion campaignGlade United Church of Christ, on Fulton Avenue in Walkersville, is kicking off a campaign to raise $595,000 for upgrades. The fundraising campaign is called ‘‘Our Church – Our Future.” Leading the effort to raise funds are Kathy Angleberger, Marianne Brown, Jan Dinterman, Alan Ven Douern, the Rev. Gerald C. Hanberry, Shannon Jordre, the Rev. Robert F.R. Peters Jr., Mary Scheele, Brooks Widder, Adriane Wodey and Jay Zimmerman. The church will use the funds to renovate its sanctuary and educational wing, and to repay some of its capital improvements debt. The church’s audio⁄video system, pipe organ and parking lot will also be improved. At a Feb. 9 dinner at the Cozy Restaurant, the Rev. Joan P. Evans, from Immanuel United Church of Christ in Cambridge, Dorchester County, will share details from her congregation’s recently completed capital campaign with Glade members. Walkersville Highalumna honored Gina M. Casadei of Walkersville was named to York College’s Senior Honor Society. Casadei, the daughter of David and Deborah Casadei, is a graduate of Walkersville High School. Membership to the society at the college, in York, Pa., is limited to 5 percent of the senior class, according to a press release. Soldiers completebasic training Two members of the Gov. Thomas Johnson High School Class of 2004 recently completed military training. *Airman Dereke J. Hicks graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. During six weeks of training, he studied the mission and organization of the Air Force and gained skills including rifle marksmanship and special training in human relations. Hicks is the son of Ellaina Jones of Frederick. *Army Reserve Pvt. Christina Y. Rollins graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson in Columbia, S.C. During nine weeks of training, Rollins studied the Army mission, history, and tradition as well as earning skills including armed and unarmed combat and basic first aid. She is the daughter of Debora Rollins and sister of Larry Rollins, both of Frederick. Property-ownersrecognized for restoration Frederick residents and property owners John Bekier and Rich Bowell Jr., recently received a historic plaque from the Frederick County Landmarks Foundation for their property on Maryland Avenue in Braddock Heights. The house was erected in 1902 and was established as one of the earliest boarding houses for tourists and vacationers visiting the Braddock’s amusement and recreational parks, according to a press release from the foundation. According to the Landmarks Foundation, the house is an excellent example of a Victorian cottage that was popular in Braddock Heights in the early 1900s. The structure has a widow’s walk, wraparound porch and includes the original carriage house. The plaque program recognizes structures more than 100 years old with either historical and⁄or architectural merit including structures that have been maintained in their original form or have been returned to their original configuration.
