Byrd grew up singing in the Southern Baptist church where his father preached and his mother played piano. Initially, he played in rock bands, then assimilated the sounds of southern traditional music. Mal worked as an actor and musical director⁄composer in regional theater before settling in Austin to play music full-time — as a solo artist and as a sideman for others on mandolin, guitar and harmony vocals.
