Metro gets $34M for new rail cars, infrastructureThe Washington Area Metropolitan Transit Authority has received $34.3 million in federal funding to help build new rail cars and upgrade its aging infrastructure, U.S. Sen. Benjamin L. Cardin announced Tuesday afternoon at the Shady Grove Metro Station in Rockville. ‘‘This system has aged and needs attention,” said Cardin (D) of Pikesville. The allocation is not enough to address Metro’s needs, Cardin said. He, along with U.S. Rep. Christopher Van Hollen (D-Dist. 8) of Kensington and Sen. Barbara A. Mikulski (D) of Baltimore, are sponsoring a bill to get a stable funding source for Metro. A 2005 report by the Metropolitan Council of Governments, the Greater Washington Board of Trade and the Federal City Council found that WMATA faces an average annual operating and capital shortfall of roughly $300 million between fiscal 2006 and fiscal 2015, Cardin’s office said.
