Mustangs riding high in PVAC

Watching his team defeat Covenant Life, 57-44, for its sixth straight Potomac Valley Athletic Conference boys basketball victory was certainly the highlight of Barrie coach Jack Mitchell’s Monday evening. Seeing his team continue to mature offensively came in a close second, though.

‘‘We did a pretty nice job of executing in transition, but more importantly, we’re starting to get rhythm in our offense, and we scored in a more organized way by running our offense and getting some second shot opportunities,” said Mitchell, whose team improved to 9-4 overall and 6-0 in the PVAC, good for first place in the North Division. ‘‘The key with our team, we don’t have any single person who just dominates the scoring. We tend to have balanced scoring. Our scoring leader changes every game. We don’t put the burden on one guy. We’re team oriented.”

In Monday’s victory against a Cougars team that has lost two of its last three games, senior forward Ian Masone poured in a team-high 18 points. Sophomore guard Justin Graves and junior point guard Eric White chipped in 11 and 10 points, respectively, for the Mustangs, who compiled an 8-10 record in league play last year.

The Mustangs now have won three games in 2006, having swept league foes St. Anselm’s, one of the top teams in the South Division, and Washington Waldorf last week.
