Keeping store out makes no sense

How many of you have had the pleasure of visiting a Wegmans food market? If so, you would probably agree that it is one of the finest quality grocery stores and perhaps the most unusual shopping experience you can imagine.

What I recently learned, however, is that Wegmans would love to open a store in Montgomery County but the county won’t allow it. How can this be? Apparently Montgomery County claims it doesn’t allow big-box retailers into the county as they may hurt the mom and pop businesses here. So what is Home Depot, Lowe’s, Costco, Wal-Mart, etc? This makes no sense!

What does make sense is that Montgomery County is afraid to allow a high-quality store like Wegmans here as it may hurt sales in stores like Giant and Safeway.

We are denying our residents shopping choices and the county much-needed tax revenue. And we are sending our residents to spend their money in Fairfax County, Va.

I am disappointed by the County Council’s decision and hope they will reconsider and welcome Wegmans to Montgomery County.
