Associate VP to take on dual roles for Adventist

Adventist HealthCare has named Ashton resident Ismael Gama associate vice president of Mission Integration and Spiritual Care for the Rockville-based company.

Gama will oversee Adventist HealthCare’s Pastoral Care Services, Clinical Pastoral Education Program (CPE), Direct Spiritual Care and Parish Nursing program, according to a news release from Adventist HealthCare.

Gama, who has served as director of Mission and Pastoral Care at Washington Adventist Hospital since 2005, will continue in that position. From 2001 to 2005, he served as a pastor of the Sligo Seventh-day Adventist Church in Takoma Park and served as a staff chaplain at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital and Adventist Home Health from 1998 to 2001.

He has a bachelor’s degree in theology and psychology from Columbia Union College in Takoma Park and is working on a master’s degree in spirituality and pastoral care at Loyola College in Columbia.

Discovery taps executive for new role

Mark Hollinger, a longtime executive at Discovery Communications, has been promoted to the newly created position of chief operating officer, reporting to President and CEO David Zaslav, according to a news release from the Silver Spring-based company.

Hollinger, who was first hired by Discovery as vice president and general counsel in 1991, oversees Discovery Networks International and Discovery Commerce, and manages Corporate Operations, including information technology, media services, administration, business affairs, corporate communications, corporate marketing and research, and production management, according to the release. He also will oversee Discovery’s legal, government affairs, and standards and practices functions, as the company searches for a new general counsel.

In his new role, he will take responsibility for Discovery Studios, including the Discovery Films unit and Discovery’s internal content production operations. Chief operating officers from Discovery’s businesses now will report to Hollinger.

Rockville group holdsbusiness plan competition

The deadline for submitting business plans for the annual Start Right! Women’s Business Plan Competition offered by Rockville Economic Development Inc. and sponsored by EagleBank and Foster, Soltoff & Love Ltd. will be Jan. 28. The competition is open to businesses that are at least 51 percent women-owned, active and in operation for two years or less, and qualified to operate in Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Virginia.
