Forest Heights mayor to step down

Monday, Jan. 9, 2006

Forest Heights Mayor Joyce Beck has been forced to step down from her position after the town council voted five to two to amend 13 additional resolutions to the town charter during and emergency meeting on Jan. 5.

The council’s decisions angered many residents who attended the meeting because most had signed a petition of some 346 signatures, calling for a referendum to be set in order to vote on the resolutions. Councilman Miles Spires motioned to amend the resolutions before the petition was validated by the council.

Beck was locked out of town hall effective 12 a.m. on Jan. 6.

She and attorney Debra Davis were to file an injunction with the circuit court on Jan. 6.

‘‘We’re going to move quickly to make sure voter’s rights are protected. There’s been a serious violation of the voter’s rights,” Davis said.
