Accokeek: Unusual round design makes home stand out
Accokeek house has many custom-built features
Down a long wooded driveway, this hidden home has an uncommon, round design, which is both elegant and energy efficient.
Inside, the upper level of the home has an open floor plan with the living room and dining room areas leading around to the kitchen. The living/dining area has a slate floor, and tall double paned windows following the outer wall and offering good views of the surrounding land. There is a Rais stove in this space, made with soap stone that retains heat long after it has been heated to maximize heating with little fuel.
The kitchen features custom-made granite countertops and hardwood cabinets. The backsplash of fitted Italian glass tiles is also custom made for this home. Stainless steel appliances have been installed. The custom cabinets have glass fronts, and there is lighting underneath to illuminate the counters.
A curved hallway leads around to the master bedroom from the front of the home. The room features a large closet with a variety of storage to both hang and shelve clothes. There is carved molding surrounding the doors and windows of this room. A door to the side leads into a full bathroom, with ceramic tile used for both the floor and sink. There is a combined shower bath, and a second entrance gives this bathroom access from the hall as well.
Outside, the home is nearly surrounded by a wooden deck. In the back, the deck widens and is covered with slats which could be used to make it covered, or to have plants grown overhead. The backyard is fenced in, but the fence is designed to blend with the environment so it doesn't spoil the view of the woodland and creek beyond. There is also an in-ground pool in the yard, kidney shaped, and with slate surrounding it.
A curving staircase in the center of the home leads down to the lower floor. At the bottom of the stairs is a recreation room. A set of French doors lead out onto a screened-in porch in the back. The porch has a ceramic tile floor, lighting on the support poles around, and a wet bar to one side.
Back inside, there are two additional bedrooms on this floor, as well as a second full bathroom with the same ceramic tile as the floor above. Both bedrooms feature two large closets, the second one has a slate tile floor.
The entire home has been designed with energy efficiency in mind, with a central skylight in the roof of the upper floor allowing for easy regulation of the temperature, whether it's retaining heat, or cooling the home. It's surrounded by protected land on nearly all sides, and yet is only about a 20 minute drive to Washington, D.C., and a five minute drive to National Harbor.
