Friday, Jan. 4, 2008 Reporters Notebook: Remember who loves you ... — C. Benjamin Ford |
Your brother, your boss, your barkeep might not remember your birthday. But your congressman Al Wynn will send you a card if you’re on the right voter registration list for his district.
Facing a tough challenge in the Dem primary from Donna Edwards again, Wynn is making the race personal — with a smiling photo of himself holding a birthday sheet cake.
‘‘I join your friends and loved ones in wishing you the very best on your birthday,” reads the card, sent to us by a surprised voter. ‘‘May the entire year be wonderful for you. I hope you are blessed with health, happiness and prosperity for many years to come.”
On the back of the card is a message to ‘‘Vote Wynn for Congress” at the Feb. 12 primary and contact information to ‘‘Join the Wynning Team.”
Wynn campaign manager Lori Sherwood said the cards are sent out by the campaign staff.
‘‘It something candidates do all the time,” she said. ‘‘I don’t know how long we’ve been doing it, but we’ve gotten a lot of positive feedback.”
Sherwood said she did not know how much the campaign has spent on the birthday cards.
Birthdates of registered voters are available on a public database list that candidates often use, said Montgomery County Board of Elections spokeswoman Marjorie Roher.
