Black History Month was created in 1926 when the second week of February was chosen for Negro History Week. In 1976, the the week was expanded into the entire month of February.

Events

The sixth annual Black History Step Show is scheduled to run from 7 to 9 p.m. Feb. 24 at the Marlow Heights Community Center, 2800 St. Clair Drive, Marlow Heights.

‘‘Remembering Our Heritage,” a free presentation of local gospel choirs, liturgical dancers and gospel comedians, is scheduled to run from 1 to 3 p.m. Feb. 25 at the Suitland Community Center, 5600 Regency Lane, Suitland.

The Pilot-Aires gospel group is scheduled to present a free concert of gospel music from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Feb. 25 at the John E. Howard Community Center, 4400 Shell St., Capitol Heights.

A free African-American trivia quiz is scheduled to run from 7 to 9 p.m. Feb. 25 at the Hillcrest Heights Community Center, 2300 Oxon Run Drive, Hillcrest Heights.

An Evening of liturgical dance to gospel music is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. Feb. 25 at Publick Playhouse, 5445 Landover Road, Cheverly.

A presentation on African-Americans in the movies is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Feb. 26 at the Beltsville Community Center, 3900 Sellman Road, Beltsville.

‘‘The Life of Benjamin Banneker,” a free presentation on Banneker by actor Bob Smith, is scheduled to run from 4 to 5 p.m. Feb. 28 at the South Bowie Community Center, 1717 Pittsfield Lane, Bowie.
