Understanding the HPV Epidemic and the Vaccine Designed to Fight It

This lecture is geared toward anyone, in any age group, interested in finding out more information about cervical cancer prevention. The discussion is more like a journey of discovery back to a period when we didn’t know about abnormal Pap smears and about the causes of cervical cancer. During these “dark ages,” no one knew that HPV, a double standed virus, was the causative agent of cervical cancer. Gardasil, first introduced in 2006, is one of the first vaccines to combat this virus. Dr. Behram in this informative discussion will talk about these key points:

  • History of cervical disease and early attempts to diagnose & treat
  • Discovery of HPV as cause of human cervical cancer
  • Role of Gardasil in fighting HPV-related disease.
Guest speaker Steve Behram, M.D.
F.A.C.O.G. is a member of the medical staff at Montgomery General Hospital and for many years, has been recognized by The Washingtonian Magazine, Washington Families, and the Consumers’ Research Council of America as “Best OB/GYN”. He is a board certified member of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and specializes in the care of high-risk pregnancy cases.
