The Gazette Photographer The Gazette has an opening for staff photographer, based in its Prince George’s County office in Laurel, Md. Must have the ability to shoot engaging images of a wide variety of subjects including news, sports, features and portraits, and be able to understand the story as presented on a photo assignment and produce pictures that illuminate the subject. The photographer must be a master of the technical aspects of digital photography, including camera function and artificial lighting. While on assignment, must be able to gather accurate information about the event and the people photographed. A thorough working knowledge of Adobe Photoshop and Photo Mechanic is required. Must be well versed in toning/color correcting images for both web and print production and able to work quickly and accurately under pressure on deadline. It is necessary for every photographer to continually add to his or her skills in video and sound for the web. This includes learning about editing using Final Cut and producing slide shows for the web using Soundslides. Photographers must be prepared for anything and have the ability to respond quickly when breaking news happens. Qualified candidates must be able to perform the essential functions of this position with or without reasonable accommodation. This includes being able to carry 30 pounds for an extended period under all kinds of weather conditions, walking long distances with this equipment to reach the scene of a news event, in some cases going over fences or through thick underbrush. The photographer must be able to move quickly to avoid being hit while photographing sporting events from the sidelines and must also be able to climb into the cockpit of a small airplane or helicopter if an assignment calls for aerial photographs. Part-time The Gazette is expanding its coverage of sports on Gazette.Net, its award-winning web site, and seeks part-time correspondents to gather game scores and highlights on evenings and weekends. Job duties including reporting and writing, appending news briefs and filing material under deadline pressure. Excellent telephone interviewing skills are necessary, as is a track record demonstrating a high degree of accuracy and the ability to work independently. This is a perfect opportunity for journalism students, especially those following a sports-track, or others who have an interest in writing and reporting community sports news and features, such as high school football, soccer, field hockey, wrestling and cross-country. Correspondents will work with editors in our offices in Gaithersburg, Laurel and Frederick, Md. Most shifts are approximately 7 p.m. to midnight Fridays and 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturdays during the fall sports season.
