Barrie coach Jack Mitchell's first foray into the Potomac Valley Athletic Conference boys basketball tournament and his program's first since winning it all three years ago was a successful one last Thursday.

Continuing a strong late-season run, which landed the squad the fourth seed in the North Division and a first-round home game, Barrie upended Grace Brethren, 55-46, to advance to Tuesday's quarterfinal contest with South Division winner Washington International School, played too late for this edition of The Gazette.

After falling behind by one point, 29-28, at halftime, the Mustangs (9-20 record) outscored Grace Brethren, 27-17, in the second half through a balanced offensive attack and a frantic full-court press.

"We picked up our full-court pressure and caused a couple of turnovers and we settled down in the second half," Mitchell said. "We were able to gain continuity in our half-court sets and once we started running our half-court stuff, we were able to punch the ball inside."

Senior forward Eli Sachs turned many of those inside looks into 18 points before he fouled out with three-plus minutes left in the game. Sophomore point guard Eric White, who poured in a team-high 20 points, then closed out the win by making 5 of 6 free throws down the stretch.

"In the fourth quarter, they were down so they were trying to foul," Mitchell said. "Fortunately for us, Eric made them pay for that. Eric made some clutch free throws."

Barrie dropped a 32-29 decision to Washington International earlier this season.

Aguirre lifts Cougars to win

Covenant Life senior forward Bryan Aguirre has plagued opposing defenses throughout the Potomac Valley Athletic Conference this season but he really seems to play well against Edmund Burke.

In the team's first meeting in mid-January, Aguirre poured in 27 points. He followed that performance with 25 points, including three 3-pointers, during last Thursday's first-round PVAC tournament contest to lead the Cougars to a 64-51 win.

Wildebeest feel déjà vu

Despite showing itself to be more competitive this season, the Sandy Spring Friends boys basketball team finished the 2004-05 season with the same mark as last year, 4-19.
