Poolesville area students recently collected a vanload of school and cleaning supplies to benefit a Florida elementary school suffering the effects of this season's hurricanes.
Poolesville High seniors Megan MacGregor of Poolesville and Rachel Ganassa of Barnesville co-chaired the drive for Mariposa Elementary School in Port St. Lucie as their Leadership Class service project after teacher Scott Mathias described the situation at the school where his sister teaches.
The class collected school supplies and more than $1,200 in cash donations from students, parents and community members as well as cleaning supplies from Jon's Hardware. Donation boxes at John Poole and North Bethesda Middle Schools and Monocacy Elementary School contributed to the effort.
The rulers, protractors, lunch boxes, workbooks and other items purchased with the money filled four shopping carts, MacGregor said. "We basically went through the two school aisles at Wal-Mart and cleared them out."
Mathias delivered the supplies Oct. 11. Meanwhile, Poolesville High's soccer team is planning a fund-raiser to purchase more backpacks for the school.
The return of the Confederacy
A local chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, E. V. White Chapter #1360, was officially reactivated in August and will be holding a Charter Presentation Ceremony at 2 p.m. Nov. 14 at the Monocacy Chapel near the intersection of Route 28 and Route 109 in Beallsville.
The attempt to reconstitute the chapter, which met at the chapel until the 1950s, was part of a July 2003 Gazette article. The chapter is named for Col. Elijah Viers White, who was born near Poolesville and later owned White's Ferry.
The group is being chartered with 12 members, said president Linda Atwell of Frederick. Atwell invited members of other chapters, prospective members, family and friends to attend the presentation event.
For its first year the Chapter will meet in the chapel at 1 p.m. on the third Sundays of January, March, May, September and November. A summer trip or outing is planned for June. A Web site is also in process.
