The Barrie girls basketball team took sole position of second place in the Potomac Valley Athletic Conference's North Division with a pair of wins following an encouraging defeat to start last week.

With a 6-5 record in PVAC play, Barrie (10-5 overall) looks up to only first-place Jewish Day in the North Division. If it can continue this pace, the Mustangs will win one of the top seeds in the upcoming PVAC tournament.

They moved into that spot with a 45-37 win over Sandy Spring Friends Friday and a 35-28 victory against Covenant Life (5-9, 4-7 in the PVAC) Saturday following a week-opening 35-24 loss to Grace Brethren last Tuesday.

That setback, however, supplied Barrie with a boost of confidence as it held probably the league's best team to just 35 points. The Mustangs stayed close the whole way, trailing by five points after the first quarter and by six at halftime. An inefficient third quarter, in which the team scored just two points, helped Grace Brethren hold it off at the end.

"This was the best game we've played all season," Barrie coach Anthony Awkward said. "We held them under their total points per game. We also kept their top player under her average."

Julia Roberts paced Barrie's offense with 11 points. Lauren Abbott chipped in seven points.

Abbott had an even bigger offensive outburst in the team's win against the Wildebeest Friday, pouring in 19 points, including three 3-pointers. Julia and Jamie Roberts added eight points apiece.

The Mustangs forged a 26-20 halftime lead. Sandy Spring cut the deficit to 32-29 through three quarters but a 13-8 fourth quarter gave them the victory.

On Saturday, Barrie used an 11-0 fourth quarter-run to upend Covenant Life, which played the same five players all game because of injuries. The Mustangs trailed 28-24 in the second half but scored six straight points in less than 20 seconds and then held the Cougars scoreless the rest of the way.

The six-point rally was fueled by an easy layup, the follow-up of a missed free throw and a steal and basket.

Jamie Roberts and Lauren Abbott produced 13 and 12 points, respectively, to guide Barrie to victory.

Notes: The Barrie boys basketball team switched last week's game against the Seed School from varsity to junior varsity as Seed is made up of underclassmen. It will play Capitol Christian Friday in its lone game this week.
