The Barrie Day girls basketball team suffered its first league loss of the season Monday but it's still off to a hot start under first-year coach Anthony Awkward.

The Mustangs dropped a 51-26 decision to Jewish Day (6-0, 3-0 in the Potomac Valley Athletic Conference) Monday but two league wins by the squad last week had its record standing at 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the PVAC. Those four wins are half as many as the team collected all of last year.

"Tonight's game was a little rough for us," Awkward said.

The Lions jumped out to leads of 16-3 after one quarter and 30-11 by halftime to cruise to the win. Jackie Zitelman paced Jewish Day with 13 points. Rachel Cohen and Amy Zitelman chipped in 7 points apiece.

Abbott, Julia Roberts and Amanda Archer paced the Mustangs with six points apiece. Jamie Roberts added five points in the loss.

Barrie's first two league games, played last week, went a lot smoother with wins over Sandy Spring Friends, 41-32, last Monday and Washington Waldorf, 55-18, last Wednesday.

Jamie Roberts led the Mustangs offensively against Sandy Spring, pouring in a team-high 10 points. Julia Roberts, Abbott and Archer chipped in 8 points apiece to fuel the balanced attack.

Barrie opened up a 22-7 halftime lead by outscoring the Wildebeest 10-0 in the second quarter. Sandy Spring made things closer with a 19-point fourth quarter.

A similar fast start propelled the Mustangs past Waldorf as they opened up leads of 20-2 after one quarter and 32-6 at halftime. Julia Roberts produced a game-high 18 points, matching Waldorf's score. Abbott followed with 14 points and Jamie Roberts had 10 points in the lopsided victory.

"We have two games before the winter break," Awkward said. "The time should [allow] us to get back into the swing of things. We've been overlooked in the conference this year. If we can stay healthy, we're going to be a team to be reckoned with this season, a true sleeper."

Those two games are against league newcomer McLean Wednesday and the Seed School Friday.
