Despite not playing at its best last week, the Jewish Day boys basketball team got a split of its two games.

A poor shooting night last Tuesday helped Barrie (10-4, 5-0 in the PVAC) hand the Lions (4-1, 2-1 in the PVAC) their first loss of the 2001-02 season, a 44-34 defeat in a Potomac Valley Athletic Conference game.

"We just couldn't score," said Jewish Day coach Vic Littman. "We did a great job of staying in the game with them. Hopefully, we play them one or two more times. They shutdown Gabe [Dymond]."

Adam Herschthal and A.J. Shapiro led the way with 7 points apiece.

Jewish Day bounced back to defeat Georgetown Day, 45-44, in overtime Wednesday. The game was played at the MCI Center before a Washington Wizards contest.

For the second time this season, Jesse Dymond hit a game-winning 3-pointer from well beyond the arc to give Jewish Day the victory. Dymond, who hit the shot with 1.8 seconds left, finished with a team-high 19 points. Gabe Dymond, who finished with 8 points, faced a box-and-one defense as teams are focusing more and more on stopping the proficient scorer.

"We didn't play well," Littman said. "We were lucky to get the ball at the end. We were lucky it went into overtime. It was tough playing there. Teams are really concentrating on taking the ball out of Gabe's hands. Once he gave the ball up, he had a tough time getting the ball back. We're trying to make adjustments."

Jewish Day was to continue play Monday against Washington Waldorf and Tuesday against Sandy Spring Friends. The Lions will then play Capitol Christian Thursday.
