Last year's Barrie boys basketball team set the school record for most wins in a season but if this year's early-season success is any indication of how the rest of the campaign might go, that record won't be safe for long.

The Mustangs, under coach Darnell Myers, set the school record by compiling a 17-7 record. Barrie is already on pace to break that mark through the first few weeks of the season as the Mustangs won six of their first seven contests.

"I think we can be better," Myers said. "If all four [of his top players] play together and all four get to the gym and are ready to play, we're a very hard team to play."

In their most recent action, the Mustangs took second in last weekend's Potomac School Invitational after winning its own Turkey Shootout and the Pallotti Invitation to open the season. Barrie defeated St. John's-Prospect Hall, 46-38, in Friday's first round but lost 58-53 to host Potomac in Saturday's final.

Senior guard Bobby Sharafeddin led the Barrie offensive attack with 25 points against St. John's and 17 against Potomac. Senior forward Frank Mason and forward Josh Colwell contributed a combined 45 points in the two tournament games.

"I thought we should have won the Potomac School tournament," Myers said. "We had chances to win it. We stole the ball two times only down two points in the game and missed both layups. I thought the kids played pretty well."

Before that tournament, Barrie won its first league game of the season, defeating Washington Waldorf, 77-29. The Mustangs also captured the Pallotti Invitational the prior weekend, besting St. Mary's-Ryken, 74-44, in the first round and Glenelg Country School, 55-51, in the final.

Colwell pounded St. Mary's for 22 points while Sharafeddin and Mason added 15 and 13 points, respectively. In the final win over Glenelg, Sharafeddin had 17 points, Colwell, had 8 points, 16 rebounds and 3 steals and Mason added 9 points and 12 rebounds.

Sharafeddin, a 6-4 shooting guard, averaged around 19 points a game during that run of games. He averaged a team-high 20 points a contest a year ago.

Barrie was to resume play Tuesday against defending PVAC champion Hebrew Academy (3-0). The Mustangs will continue league play Friday against Sandy Spring Friends.
