Over the last two weeks of the season, the Riverdale Baptist boys' soccer team has regained its winning ways. Monday afternoon, the Crusaders downed Washington Christian 3-1 for their third consecutive victory.
Seniors Ed Showman and Wes Johnson had a goal apiece as did midfielder Greg Morgan. Senior Todd Jones delivered his usual brand of steady play in the net to help the Crusaders prevail.
"I'm very proud of this team," Riverdale head coach Bob Surrette said. "We're young, but we play with a lot of character. The kids have tremendous attitude and they play with a great deal of sportsmanship. We've only gotten a few yellow cards and no red cards this season. My senior tri-captains have really done an excellent job leading us on the field."
In addition to the seniors, Riverdale has a number of underclassmen who have received rave reviews from Surrette. Among them are Andrew Cox, Greg McGriff, John Butler, Reggie Leonard, Danny Ulrich, Ted Knapp and eighth grader Lanair Proctor.
Last week, Riverdale defeated nearby-rival Largo 9-2, and three days earlier it defeated Capital Christian 5-0. The Crusaders have played several very tough opponents this year, namely Parkside, the state Class 1A runner-up last year.
