Watch out Potomac Valley Athletic Conference members, the Barrie School is poised to do some serious damage in league play this winter.
Not only does Barrie coach Darnell Myers return his top two scorers from a year ago but he also got an early Christmas present in the addition of transfer Frank Mason.
Senior point guard Derrick Bell (5-8) and junior shooting guard Bobby Sharafeddin (6-4) led the Mustangs in scoring last year and to a respectable .500 record (8-8) in the increasingly competitive PVAC. Sharafeddin scored a team-high 18 points a contest a year ago while Bell poured in 16 points a game while also directing the team's offense.
In Mason, Myers gets a high-scoring 6-foot-3 small forward. Good Counsel competes in the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference, which means the transfer student has played against some very stiff competition.
Mason already knocked down 20 points apiece in two wins over Chelsea and Glenelg Country School during the team's own recently held tournament.
"He's a very good addition to the team," Myers said. "He can do it all. All three [top players] have 3-point range."
Rounding out the team's starting lineup are 6-3 senior forward Brian Abbott and 5-11 junior guard Scott Fulton. Fulton is another strong outside shooter.
"I think we can compete," Myers said. "If they play to their potential and work really hard, they can win some games."
Barrie has already looked impressive in its wins over Chelsea (66-50) and Glenelg Country School (66-54). Besides Mason, Barrie was led by Fulton's 14 points and Bell's 13 in the Chelsea victory. Bell netted 23 and Abbott chipped in 11 in the Glenelg win, which was in the championship of Barrie's tourney.
Both victories were without Sharafeddin, who was out with appendicitis. Myers said that last year's top scorer would have returned by yesterday's league opener with Hebrew Academy.
