The Barrie School concluded its most successful season in recent years with a heart-breaking 53-52 loss to Grace Brethren in the first round of the Potomac Valley Athletic Conference playoffs last month.

Despite the disappointing loss, the Mustangs finished the year with a 10-10 record, their most wins since 1993, and made a strong impact during the school's inaugural season in the conference.

"Our kids worked hard from the very beginning," first-year coach Darnell Myers said. "I think they did a good job learning the new system and became a much better team by the end of the season."

Myers, a former assistant at Georgetown under coach John Thompson, said he believes the efforts of Barrie's lone senior, Jahmal White, helped the team learn to play with pride throughout the season.

"We showed some people that we're not the same Barrie School that people used to beat by 20 or 30 points," Myers said.

The Mustangs were led by sophomore guard Bobby Sharafeddin, who averaged 17.1 points and 10.3 rebounds per game, while junior guard Derrick Bell contributed a solid 14.4 points and 3.5 assists per game.

In a highly prosperous season overall, the team's biggest wins came during the middle of the season against conference opponents. While hosting conference powerhouse Field School, the Mustangs got 27 points and 19 rebounds from Sharafeddin to capture the 57-54 upset victory. And after losing by 29 to Covenant Life earlier in the season, Barrie responded with a three-point victory at home when later in the year.
