Montgomery County Assistant Chief Administrative Officer Fariba Kassiri will head the Department of Environmental Protection until a new director can be found.

Director Bob Hoyt retired in August and County Executive Isiah Leggett has appointed Kassiri as interim department director, county spokesman Patrick Lacefield said. Hoyt served with the county for seven years.

Lacefield said search to replace Hoyt is not yet under way.

Whomever Leggett appoints to the post is subject to confirmation by the County Council.

As director of Environmental Protection, Hoyt oversaw the county’s trash, recycling, energy, stormwater, environmental and sustainability programs.

Kassiri was named a chief administrative officer in 2006. She is responsible for managing the operations of county government, providing oversight to department directors and ensuring that department activities align with county priorities, according to the county website.
