Aggravated assault reported in Herndon

Two Herndon residents have been charged with assaulting, robbing and holding a Herndon man against his will.

On Aug. 8, police say they responded to a call of aggravated assault in the 600 block of Center Street.

Police said they discovered a Herndon man who reported he had been assaulted, robbed and held against his will by his ex-girlfriend and her current boyfriend. Police said the man sustained several non-life-threatening injuries. Ruchi Kapani, age 31, of Herndon, and Pramod Subramanian, age 28, of Herndon, were charged with aggravated assault by mob, malicious wounding, strangulation, abduction and robbery. Subramanian also was charged with petit larceny and vehicle trespass.

Springfield cat tests positive for rabies

Fairfax County police say a Springfield woman is being vaccinated against rabies after she was bit on Aug. 4 by a cat that was in her care on Laurel Oak Court in the Saratoga neighborhood of the Mount Vernon District.

Police said the cat was euthanized and tested for rabies as a precaution following the bite. The rabies test came back positive on Aug. 6.

Police said health department officials evaluated the woman for rabies exposure and recommended that she receive a rabies vaccine.

Before the rabies confirmation, on July 30, the infected cat’s 10 kittens were signed over to animal control officers, prior to any signs that the cat was ill. Seven of these kittens were adopted from the Fairfax County Animal Shelter between July 31 and August 6. The remaining three cats were not adopted and were removed from the shelter as soon as the mother cat tested positive for rabies. None of the kittens so far has exhibited any signs of illness, police said.

Police say that if anyone is concerned that they may have been bitten or scratched by this cat, please contact animal control at 703-691-2131.
