An overturned dump truck blocked lanes in both directions on I-270 near Montrose Road Wednesday afternoon and dumped an estimated 15 tons of sand onto the highway, according to state police.
The truck was travelling north and may have been cut off by a passenger vehicle, said Sgt. Bittinger of the Maryland State Police barrack in Rockville. The driver lost control of the truck and it overturned just south of Montrose Road, spilling the sand, Bittinger said.
The drivers of both the truck and the passenger vehicle had injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening and a passenger in the truck was not injured, Bittinger said.
Three northbound lanes of I-270 were closed due to debris from the crash and two southbound lanes were closed to allow emergency vehicles to access the scene, Bittinger said.
Police were hopeful that the crash would be cleared by early evening, Bittinger said.
