The final piece of the Reston Town Center as envisioned in the original late-1980s plan for the area will soon come to fruition.

On Tuesday, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors approved plans for new high-rise office and residential buildings. The developer also plans to make upgrades to a now undeveloped park area.

“It continues to build out the Town Center relationship of residential, commercial and retail. They have creatively found ways to keep all of those there,” Supervisor Cathy Hudgins (D-Hunter Mill) said of the plans, adding that she is pleased to see this piece of the plan move forward.

The property, which sits at the corner of Reston Parkway and New Dominion Drive, now includes a parking lot, the One Freedom Square office building, and a strip of undeveloped land.

A low-rise portion of the existing office building will be replaced by a 17-story office tower with an underground parking garage. The building will have retail space at ground level.

In the area where the current parking lot is, the developer plans to build two new residential towers, one 19 stories and one 21 stories, surrounding a courtyard area.

There will also be a new parking garage for the residential buildings, which will be wrapped with retail space and other architectural details at the ground level to make it more visually appealing.

The existing open space along Reston Parkway will be spruced up with new walkways, improved landscaping and benches to give it more of a park feeling than the area has today.

While the proposal was submitted as an update to the original zoning plan for Reston Town Center, county land use staff evaluated the project against the standards in the new Reston Master Plan Urban Core, which the Board of Supervisors approved in February to reflect the current and future Silver Line stations.
