Montgomery County police on Wednesday identified the two officers who were involved in Tuesday’s fatal shooting of a man in a Silver Spring bank and provided additional information about the confrontation.
The man — Donovan Bayton, 54, of Silver Spring — was “behaving erratically” inside the Capital One Bank at 8740 Arliss St. in Silver Spring on Tuesday, police said.
Officers Michael Damskey and Marcus Lee, responding to a call of trespassing a few minutes before noon, found Bayton with a knife, threatening the safety of bank employees, patrons and officers.
When Bayton refused to follow the officers’ instructions, Damskey fired one shot, hitting Bayton in the torso, police said.
Bayton was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Police waited until Wednesday to release the names of the officers.
Damskey has less than one year of service with the department and Lee has less than two years of service, police said. They are assigned to the Third District.
Both officers were placed on paid administrative leave, standard procedure while authorities look into the circumstances of the shooting.
Police said the officers recovered two knives from the scene at the bank.
