A Montgomery County police officer fatally shot a man who had a knife inside a Silver Spring bank on Tuesday, police said.
At 11:54 a.m., police received a report of trespassing at the Capital One Bank at 8740 Arliss St., Silver Spring, according to Lucille Baur, a spokeswoman for the police department.
In a news release, police said a man displayed a knife and was “behaving erratically” in the bank. The man threatened the safety of officers who responded to the call and didn’t respond to officers’ instructions, police said.
One officer shot the man in the torso. The man was taken to an area hospital, where he died, police said.
Police identified the man as Donovan Bayton, 54, of Silver Spring.
Two officers from the Third District who responded to the bank were placed on paid administrative leave while the call is investigated, which is standard procedure, police said.
The officers were not identified on Tuesday. Police said they expect to release the officers’ identities on Wednesday.
Police said two knives were recovered at the scene.
An earlier version of this story misspelled Donovan Bayton’s last name.
