Southern Maryland Martial Arts & Fitness has signed a deal to expand its services in La Plata, relocating in the space previously occupied by La Plata Fitness on Drury Drive.
What started as a 2,000-square-foot taekwondo school in Bryans Road has expanded into two facilities, with several types of martial arts now taught as well as a full-scale fitness center, according to a studio news release.
The grand opening of the new facility is expected in August.
The new 16,000-square-foot facility will offer a fitness center, including brand-new equipment, a spinning room, group exercise room, cardio area, a sauna, tanning, a Kids Club gym child care area and a martial arts matted area that will host taekwondo classes for those 3 and older. The will also be cage fitness classes.
Southern Maryland Martial Arts & Fitness also provides a before- and after-school martial arts program serving six schools in Bryans Road and four schools in La Plata. Themed summer camps are hosted in both locations.
Jeremy Gray, master instructor and owner of Southern Maryland Martial Arts & Fitness, and 15-time first-place winner of the Maryland Amateur Union Taekwondo Championship led the taekwondo program to a third-place ranking in the nation at the July 4 Nationals in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., according to the release.
Gray said he and his staff are “extremely ready and excited to provide the additional space for the growing martial arts family in La Plata and to also have the chance to spread the passion for creating a more healthy and positive community through the tenets of martial arts as well as physical fitness and nutrition, to include a brand new gym facility,” according to the release.
