An 8-year-old boy was flown to a hospital after suffering minor injuries Monday in a collision between the bicycle he was riding and a car in Great Mills, police report, and the car’s driver was arrested on a charge of driving without a license.

Orlando Mays, 20, of Great Mills was released later that evening on personal recognizance to await a court hearing on the citation issued after the collision near his apartment on Church Drive.

A preliminary investigation indicated the bicycle ridden by the boy entered the path of the 2014 Toyota Camry, the St. Mary’s sheriff’s office reports from the accident that occurred shortly before 8 p.m., in the area of the roadway’s intersection with Military Lane.

Bay District volunteer firefighters and Lexington Park rescue volunteers also responded, along with a St. Mary’s medic team and Maryland State Police helicopter crew, according to county dispatch records, before the injured child was flown to the Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C, as a precautionary measure.

This story was updated at 5 p.m. July 9 to correct the age of the victim.
