On June 17 county officials and residents gathered at BlackRock Center for the Arts in Germantown to celebrate Juneteenth, which commemorates emancipation in Texas on June 19, 1865 when the Civil War ended.

County Police Chief J. Thomas Manger read the Emancipation Proclamation, and student winners of the county’s NAACP’s Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics performed.

Director of the county’s Office of Human Rights James Stowe read a scene from the musical “Porgy and Bess,” a love story set in a black South Carolina community in 1912.

County Executive Isiah Leggett, County Council President Craig Rice and Upcounty Regional Director Catherine Matthews also joined in the annual celebration.
