On Sunday about 470 students graduated from Northwest High School in Germantown in a ceremony at DAR Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C.
Dr. Joseph Swope, a social studies and AP psychology teacher, was chosen by the students to speak at graduation. Assistance Principal Tim Britton said that it’s unusual for a staff member to speak at graduation.
“They unanimously voted that they wanted us to pick a staff member, and Dr. Joseph Swope was the unanimous choice,” Britton said.
Preetcharn Saund was the student speaker. The administration asks interested students to submit an essay about speaking at graduation and then choose a student to address the class.
Two students, David Snyder and Mariya Chevchuk, tied as top student, with grade point averages of 4.77.
Over 3,000 students filled the hall to recognize the graduates.
